Review: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess(GC)

Midna

Genre: Adventure
Rating: Teen - mild violence, Midna’s voice will make your ears bleed after 30hrs

I just completed Twilight Princess for the Game Cube today. I made it a goal to complete the game before Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 comes out tomorrow. I have played nearly every one of the Zelda games and consider Ocarina of Time to be the best game in the series. To say the least I was disappointed with TP. I was just expecting more from the overall gameplay than a rehash of what has come before.

I know the Zelda formula and it is used without pause throughout TP, but they stick to closely to that formula. Explore dungeon, fight mid-boss, acquire new item, use new item to reach boss, use new item to defeat boss, rinse and repeat for the next 8 dungeons. Its the same old thing we have been doing in every Zelda since the first. Give me something new. I’m not saying that formula doesn’t work, but after so many iterations of the same game it starts to get old. Especially, for such a big fan of the series as me.

Enemy encounter

In terms of story, the game is very straight forward without any big twists along the way. Midna is an excellent partner throughout the adventure even though she adds little in terms of new gameplay. Transforming into the wolf is the biggest change TP takes from other Zelda games. While it’s fun and leads to some interesting puzzles it’s under used and the tasks involved get repetitive.

TP has an outstanding artistic graphical style that they really put a lot of attention on. It’s far more reminiscent of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask than it is of Wind Waker. While the graphics have jaggy’s and appear blurry compared to the more next gen graphics we have come to expect of games it doesn’t hurt the eyes at all and makes the world seem nostalgic.

I chose to play this on GC instead of the Wii because I don’t like the Wii’s control scheme. I tried out TP on a Wii for a few hours before I decided to get it for the GC. I don’t need nor want to move my controller all around the place when I can just push a button that does the same thing. Call me lazy, but the Wii’s controls will never be my preferred method of play for this kind of game.

Midna and Link in wolf form

Following in the footsteps of Wind Waker with a more realistic looking game like TP wasn’t as big a step for Nintendo that it needed to be. Wind Waker proved that the Zelda franchise can change in nearly every way an still be a great game. TP, while a very good game suffers from too much nostalgia and shows Nintendo’s unwillingness to push things too far away from the standards they have set with their legendary series.

Graphics - 9…highly artistic visual style that works well

Sound - 8… nostalgia, updated tunes of old favorites, only a few new tunes, but nothing great

Gameplay - 7…same old formula that any Zelda fan will instantly get into, but overall lacking in terms of anything truly new or innovative, logical puzzles work, but battle is simplistic

Value - 8…a new Zelda game that works like all the rest, lengthy 35 hour+ adventure with multiple side quests

Overall - 8…Very Good, buy it if you love Zelda games

  1. what, twilight princess is way more good than ocarina of time there is the graphics, the storyline and the dungeons.

your free to your own opinion but boy, that is weird

  2. Weird? Yes, I am.

I’m not afraid to state my true feelings about games. TP wasn’t the update to the series I was expecting it to be. I have played almost every single Zelda game released by Nintendo. I know the formula like the back of my hand. TP didn’t evolve the Zelda style enough for me to consider it one of the best Zelda games. And, an 8 isn’t a low score; it’s a great score and I recommend this game to any fan of the Zelda franchise. Just expect an inferior game to what has come before.

  3. Omg the Wii’s Zelda is the best thing that came out for the Wii.I need help on the part where you have to guid Llia and the lady throught the feild whit all the pig riders shoot at you it bugs me so bad I really need help. Can you please tell me what to do?

  4. Deathkiss, check out gamefaqs.com for your answers. But, since I am a nice guy I’ll tell ya what to do. Simply kill everything in the caravans path until it stops going around in circles.

Go here and read the faqs. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/file/928519/45837

  6. i.. sort of agree. I was dissapointed at FIRST with twilight princess, and i understand what you mean with the whole go in the temple, fight mini boss, get item, use item, use item to kill boss ETC ETC ETC. But isnt that what MAKES it a zelda game? I still like ocarina of time.. its been a long time sinc eilast played it ^3^ wouldnt it be ausome if they redid it for wii or whatever :) but.. yeah :) twilights plot is a bit.. all over the place too but w/e; i still love TP as much as OOT

  7. “TP wasn’t the update to the series I was expecting it to be. I have played almost every single Zelda game released by Nintendo. I know the formula like the back of my hand.”

  8. tp is amzine hav been stuck on dat water dungeon 4 ages and finnaly dne it and got the master sword lookin forward to da rest of it!!!! :)

  9. i love zelda games so much its the best in the world, ever since the first one my nick name has been Zelda and i just effen love the games who cares if its the same thing lol, its the charecters that i love!!!

  10. This review is a load of bull i got the twilight princess and have got to the yeti’s mansion i would give this game a 10/10 get ya facts straight u fuckin dumbass who made this review

  11. @toveryo

Okay, so why exactly am I a dumbass for voicing my opinion with clarification and justification? I truly feel TP to an inferior product to some of the past Zelda adventures. After the Zelda’s that came before, TP didn’t feel as fresh as the previous outings. To me it went back to the basic formula and ran it into the ground. Still, it is a great game and well the time for any fan of the series but I can think of four Zelda games off the top of my head that I would recommend before TP.

  12. AWSOMEST GAME EVERR , YEAH

  13. excellent

  14. I understand that this is your own opinion but i like tp more than the rest..I was playing it and it had way harder dungeons and even more fun things to do.I recommend this game for anyone..After i passed the game like 4 months ago i was sad..I didn’t want to finish the game…

  15. your game so totally rocks. i love it will you send me a poster to my email??? please

  16. Um.. Well, it is awesome to the max, but I agree with the old mid- boss get new item, get to boss+ defeat with new item yadda yadda yadda. But it’s still pretty awesome. Did anyone other than me notice that there was no save point after the final boss? Or is it just my disc?

  17. This is a great game. Really I prefer the Wii version as its easier to aim the bow precisely, but the GC one is alright as well. And I dont really see whats so hard about the Lakebed Temple, people were saying it took them weeks, but I was out of there in an hour. Only thing Im having trouble with is the Temple of Time, I cant find the stupid Dominion Rod, can someone help me out?

  18. Yea, the Dominion Rod is easy to get. If you go through everything, there is a large empty room at the end of the dungeon. There is an enemy in there, defeat him by first getting rid of all his armor. Then you keep using the shield attack to open his guard, and attack him. After you defeat him, the gate at the end of the room will open to give you the chest with the Dominion Rod in it. Use it with the statue, and yadda yadda yadda, you get my point. Good luck!
